What is Hymenoplasty?

Hymenoplasty surgery is a cosmetic surgery performed on women to restore, repair and reconstruct the ruptured hymen in women. The hymen is a thin membrane present at the opening of the vagina which is almost oval shaped. The passage from the vaginal opening connects to the urethral orifice and enables the dispersal of menstrual blood.
In many cultures, Hymen is considered a symbol of purity while scientific research indicates that the hymen was actually present to prevent any infections from entering the vagina. The hymen is considered as a sign of virginity but it may get ruptured due to non-sexual activities too, such as jumping, horse-riding, running. In fact, some women may also be born without a hymen.
Hymenoplasty surgery can be performed in two ways
•    If only some part of the hymen is worn off, then the surgeon repairs it and stitches it back together.
•    In case, an all-new hymen has to be reconstructed, tissues present in the other parts of the patient's body would be used.
•    Vaginal tightening is also followed along with the Hymenoplasty procedure.
