Dr. Sanjay Pandey - Top Neurologist for Parkinson’s Treatment in India

Dr. Sanjay Pandey is one of the leading neurologist in India for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders, with nearly 30 years of extensive experience in neurology. Currently serving as professor and head of department of neurology and stroke medicine at Amrita Hospitals, this doctor is recognised for his expertise in handling complex neurological disorders, which include Parkinson’s disease, movement disorders, and stroke-related neurological complications.

He began his medical education at Grant Medical College in Mumbai, where he completed his MBBS. He went on to pursue an MD in Medicine from the Institute of Medical Sciences at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi. His interest in neurology led him to complete a DM in Neurology from Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow. During his residency, he initiated research into movement disorders, particularly in patients with Japanese encephalitis, which laid the foundation for his specialisation in neurological movement disorders.

In 2011, Dr. Pandey was awarded an Indo-U.S. Science and Technology Forum fellowship, which led him to train at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke management in the United States under the mentorship of Dr. Mark Hallett. During his time there, he worked on several projects relating to essential tremors, writer’s cramp, dyskinesia, and post-traumatic movement abnormalities.

After returning to India, Dr. Pandey joined the G.B. Pant Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, where he established a centre specialised in treating Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders. Over the past decade, he has led a number of studies, particularly in postural deformities in Parkinson’s disease, botulinum toxin therapy in dystonia, tremor characteristics in dystonia, functional movement disorders, post-stroke movement complications, and genetics of neurological disorders.

At present, Dr. Pandey is leading a number of prospective studies on cognitive decline in Parkinson’s disease, drug-induced movement disorders, cranio-cervical dystonia, and essential tremor-plus syndromes. Along with research, he is actively involved in the advancement of neurology and its treatments and currently chairs the study group on Parkinson’s disease and movement dsorders under the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.
