In a world first, doctors at Paras Health in Gurugram have saved a patient’s life by combining a living donor liver transplant with double heart valve surgery. The recipient, a 55-year-old woman from Kyrgyzstan named Mrs. Anara Berdibekovna, was admitted to Paras Hospital in February with advanced liver failure and severe valvular heart disease.
Following extensive screening and pre-transplant evaluation, doctors determined that Mrs. Berdibekovna required both a liver transplant and the repair of her mitral and tricuspid heart valves. In an unprecedented and highly complex medical decision, the hospital decided to perform both procedures in a single session, the first of its kind case around the world.
Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Vice Chairman of Cardiac Sciences, explained, 'This was an extremely complex and high-risk case. The patient had severe dysfunction of both the mitral and tricuspid valves. Without first stabilizing her heart, the liver transplant would not have been feasible. Replacing the mitral valve and repairing the tricuspid valve enabled the transplant team to proceed with confidence.'
The success of this case was made possible by close collaboration between the hospital's liver transplant, cardiology, and gastroenterology departments. This specialist multidisciplinary team consisted of Dr. Vaibhav Kumar, Director of Liver Transplant & GI Surgery, and Dr. Amit Rastogi, Chairman of Liver Transplant. Cardiac care for this patient meanwhile was overseen by Dr. Sanjay Kumar and Dr. Amit Bhushan Sharma, Director and Unit Head of Cardiology, while Dr. Rajnish Monga, Chairman of Gastroenterology, dealt with the gastrointestinal aspects of the case.
Together, the team completed this operation in 12 hours, during which the patient received a partial liver donation from a family member, along with surgical replacement of the mitral valve and repair of the tricuspid valve.
The procedure was successfully completed without any complications. After receiving comprehensive post-operative care, Mrs. Berdibekovna was discharged in stable condition and is now recovering well at home.
